Dear Friends,

As the school year sprints toward its frenzied end-of-year hoopla, in between the parties and last-minute meetings, there is a hurricane of breaking down, packing up, clearing out, and filing away. Students gleefully participate in the classroom destruction — they can be seen in the halls with items on rolling chairs as they assist their teachers in wheeling no longer needed supplies into closets, feeling the giddy freedom of no more tests, lessons, and so much structured time. Backpacks and trash bins overflow, and with the purge comes a liberating thrill as everyone looks ahead to a deep dive into summertime fun. Sigh! Is not our whole life’s journey distilled into the microcosm of school life?

But it’s not quite over — with the students gone, the teachers will turn to boxing up what’s left of their entire classroom — they will likely be moved to a different room next year, and/or the walls will have to be painted and the floors waxed. Like any move, this is an arduous physical endeavor. And then, some colleagues will be back next year, and others will never be seen again, thus more parties and more good-byes. And then, if lucky, teachers and students will go home and pack their suitcases for a getaway trip to decompress after so much activity and emotions of the past ten growing, learning, laughing, crying, breath-taking, metamorphosing months. It’s not a stretch to compare this yearly event to a mini-death!

Whatever your chosen profession, hopefully you have meditation and energy practices that sustain you with respites that keep you joyful and steady. I have found nothing more complete than what Yogananda has given us. Beginner or seasoned, all individuals are welcomed to join us, and guidance provided if necessary. So, whether it’s launching into the blue sky for a summer vacation or into those mystical blue skies behind our closed eyelids — or both! — as spiritual traveling companions, we will enjoy the journey!
